WHAT ARE THE MOST RECENT DEVELOPMENTS REGARDING THE CORONAVIRUS?
Information regarding the novel coronavirus has been changing each day. The following is an update of the information that is available as of May 18th. The first reporting of cases by WHO occurred in late December 2019/early January 2020 out of Wuhan, China. On January 30th, the United States confirmed the first case of person to person transmission of the coronavirus. On March 11th, President Trump declared several travel restrictions (primarily from Europe) to help slow the spread of Covid-19. Two days later on March 13th, the coronavirus pandemic was declared a national emergency. Throughout the remainder of March, states around the country began to shut down and impose stay at home and social distancing orders. However, President Trump released a set of guidelines for reopening the states and the economy on April 16th. On May 1st, a major step was taken in defeating the virus, as the FDA approved the drug Remdesivir for emergency use for treating COVID-19. As of May 13th, 48 states have begun their reopening process.
HOW ARE LAW FIRMS BEING RESTRICTED DUE TO COVID-19?
Following the national state of emergency, small businesses and law firms have been dealt a tough blow due to restrictions. These restrictions include limiting the number of people in social gatherings to only 10. Other large areas of a common assemblage have also been forced to shut down. Non-essential businesses have been required to operate from home to help flatten the curve.
HOW DOES COVID-19 AFFECT MY LAW FIRM?
Just like other businesses, law firms have been forced to adjust to a new way of doing business. Potential clients looking to seek our consultations may be wary of stepping into your office at the risk of becoming infected. They may also not be comfortable going through sensitive legal information over the phone, leaving firms and attorneys in a difficult spot. Finding a way to continue to bring in new clients while the virus still rages is top of mind for all attorneys right now.
KEEPING YOUR CLIENTS INFORMED
During this time of madness, the most successful law firms will be the ones who can meet and exceed their client’s needs. Keeping them informed both on information about the virus, and how your law firm is coping with them can instill much confidence in your services. Clients want to view your law firm as a source of trusted information. By keeping them and the general population as updated as possible, you’ll increase your standing in the community, and build critical amounts of goodwill. Something as simple as adding a headline to your website can suffice.
USING NEWSLETTERS TO PROVIDE CLIENT UPDATES
Another tried a proven way to provide information to past and future clients are through the use of a newsletter. These newsletters can provide office updates you’ve made to your law firm as a result of it. They can include changes to location, normal operating hours, and even the addition of new staff members. Clients now have more time on their hands as ever, and sending them newsletters will keep them engaged and interested in your law firm.
SOCIAL MEDIA & BLOG UPDATES FOR YOUR CLIENTS
You shouldn’t reserve newsletters as your only form of providing updates. Both blogs and social media platforms are an excellent way to communicate with your clients. Millions of people scour social media for their daily news, so not having any sort of presence on these sites will be detrimental to your firm. Starting a website blog will also be beneficial for sending out updates. Social media posts will allow updates to be short and sweet, while blogs will offer a more detailed approach.
KEEPING YOUR SEO EFFORTS
In the digital age, one of the more crucial aspects of creating a sound marketing plan for law firms is through the SEO industry. When searching for a service, very rarely will people travel to the second page of Google. Search engine optimization practices help to ensure your practice ranks on the first page of Google, allowing the most eyes to be on your website. A visible website equates to a successful firm, and with so many people spending hours online each day, the need for SEO is critical.
SOME FINAL THOUGHTS TO CONSIDER:
- The immediate future is a crucial time for our society. People need trustworthy information and do not want their stress and anxiety taken advantage of. We recommend showing your commitment to your clients, so they know they are working with a firm that truly cares.
- Take advantage of any downtime. Your law firm should remain ever-evolving to help stay ahead of the competition. The fact of the matter is that most businesses are going to see a decline. Putting a plan in motion now will get you ahead of any potential business shortcomings.
VIRTUAL CONSULTATIONS
Has your firm considered meeting with potential clients on a virtual level for the foreseeable future? Virtual appointments allow you to gain an understanding of a potential client’s case and help show them why they should elicit your services. Finding a way to offer virtual consulate services and keeping clients comfortable with this should be at the top of your list.
